Computer Center

The university offers highly sophisticated information technology systems. Eastern Mediterranean University has a large number of computer systems and types of printing equipment for students and staff to use for their respective purposes. One computer system for every 3 students, and one for every academic staff or researcher, is the policy of the university administration. During the 2004-2005 academic year, the university had over 4800 personal computers, workstations and servers, most of which include the lastest technological hardware. There are 53 departmental PC Labs (with 35-45 PCs) which are open during the day, and 5 central labs open 24 hours for students requiring printing and plotting facilities. Also, there are 11 PC and Workstation research labs for graduate students.

All department staff and student computer systems are connected with 10/100/155/1000 Mbps bandwidth to the departmental ATM/Gigabits Ethernet Swiches. All departmental ATM/Gigabits Ethernet Switches are connected to the ATM/Gigabit Core Switch at the Computer Center, with 155/622/1000 Mbps bandwidth over fiber-optic cables.

In total over 6000 end-user (ATM 155 Mbps or 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet) ports are already installed on the campus hybrid backbone infrastructure, whose total bandwidth capacity is around 10,000Mps. All EMU Family members have a right to access the campus backbone from anywhere on campus including dormitory rooms and some wireless areas.

The university has a 39 Mbps Internet connections with two directions. One of them is 34 Mbps ATM routed to Turkish Universities Internet backbone, and the other is a 5 Mbps satellite communication routed to the European backbone. All network and Internet services are given by the Computer Center and controlled with a network management system, Internet caching, firewalls, and normally under some university rules and regulations.

All EMU Family members have a right to have life-time Internet services like e-mail, web and ftp from our servers.

The university has a Campus Licensed Agreement with software companies like MicroSoft, Oracle, SunOS, etc. and a limited license agreement for some engineering and business software like Mathematica, MathLabs, Ansys, SPSS, etc.

The Computer Center is already an authorized academy for CNAP (Cisco Networking Academy Program) and MicroSoft IT Academy to give training. It is also an authorized testing center of VUE Pearson.

The university telecommunication services are provided by the same infrastructure of campus backbone. There are three distributed sub-modules that are connected to the central Digital ISDN exchange. Around 3000 subscribers use all the facilities of the exchange. Also, the exchange has Direct Inward Dialing (DID) facilities with prefix (630).

The Computer Center is pioneering in computer technology in North Cyprus by providing Internet Solutions to institutions, businesses and industries in North Cyprus. The Computer Center is also playing a leading role in establishing a North Cyprus network and provides consultancy services to local institutions and organizations.
